Pazo Casa Grande de Almuiña, Arbo

History of the Country House:

  • Pedro Estevez de Puga was married to Francisca Méndez in 1665. The landowner of Beade and Almuiña properties builds the chapel of advent (Capilla del Buen Suceso) remaining as its guardian. In 1678, Don Pedro's heir divide the inheritance and Jacinto Estévez de Puga, parish priest of Santa María de Arbo (St. Mary´s of Arbo) is assigned the vineyard including the wine cellars that are visible from the house.

  • On the door, there is an engraving “Jacinto Estévez de Puga 1675” indicating the constructive evolution of the country house located up on a hill overlooking the vineyards.

  • Two dominating families reside in this region; the one from Almuiña de Abajo establishes family connections with the Vieytez, a noble family from a homestead in Sela, and the other from Almuiña de Arriba with blood ties to the Rivera and Giráldez families.

  • The president of the Supreme Court and Secretary to Isabel II, Ignacio Vieytez Tapia (1817-1882), acquires in 1869 the properties of Almuiña de Arriba, connecting together once again the two Almuiñas. In the 19th century, the country Galician manor house goes through an important renovation affecting different parts of the house the balconies, windows, dome and other aspects. The foundations belong to the 17th century.

  • The living rooms, halls and dining rooms went through a renovation in the XXI century, the year 2002. Splendid views of the landscape over the Miño river, Portugal and the mountainous terrain of San Fins (St. Fins) all together with granite stone granaries raised by pillars exclusive to Galicia called "horreos", wine cellars, 60.000 square metres of vineyards, ancient Roman buildings and mines, and fresh water, without any doubts this scenery makes Arbo worth visiting.
