Introduction
A Journey to Discover the Beauty of Wild Horses
Join a guided 4x4 safari around A Groba Hill in Baiona, Galicia, Spain to admire the Garrano wild horse. Led by an experienced local horse guide, Adrian of Finca Moreiras a small wild horse association that seeks to promote the Galician cultural heritage and the conservation of the breed of horses"Pura Raza Galega", which is in danger of extinction. During these safaris, local horse experts will take you on a journey to discover the beauty of wild horses and their behaviour in their natural habitat. These wild horses are the "Garranos", a special breed that we can find roaming freely in the mountains of Galicia and Northern Portugal. The Garrano horse is a small and strong horse often classified as a pony due to its size, with a height between 120 - 135 cm and weight between 150 and 200 kg. Their coat is typically dun-coloured, ranging from light grey to brown, colours from their natural environment. This breed is believed to have ancient origins, with a history dating back thousands of years to the Celts that inhabitant the region. They are considered one of the oldest horse breeds in Galicia and in the world. These sturdy and resilient horses have also been an integral part of the rural communities in Galicia and Northern Portugal, serving as working horses in agricultural activities and transportation.
A special event takes place every year during June and July called A Rapa das Bestas (The Shearing of the Beasts) where they corral the horses down the hill and the veterinarians check their health, and the hairdresser cuts their manes and tails. Then they run back up the hill with them "Running of the Wild Horse in Galicia!", a festive event celebrated for centuries in different parts of Galicia where the Garranos horses are found.
Picnic Snacks with Panoramic Views of Baiona on A Groba Hill
During our safari, we will make a stop for picnic snacks of locally sourced products (Ham, Chorizo, Spanish tortilla, empanada pie, etc...) with amazing views from the O Cortelliño & the Alto da Groba lookout points. This hill stands at around 648 metres (2,125 feet), highest and is part of a Sierra with a chain of mountains that stretch from Baiona, Tui, and A Guarda. The first lookout point we stop at will be O Cortelliño Mirador, a birds-eye view of Baiona´s harbour, bay, and even the Cies Islands in the distance. Then we will take a short drive up to the Alto da Groba, then walk a trail to see the views from an observation hut, Caseta do Montouto. Apart from the wild horses, we will also see some of the Rubia Gallega (Galician Blond Cows) that graze at the top of A Groba Hill.
