Introduction

Garrano Wild Horses: One of the Oldest Breeds in the World!

At the top of A Groba Hill in Baiona, Galicia, Spain,  amongst the trees and grazing on the hillsides you will see the Garrano wild horse. This breed is believed to have ancient origins, with a history dating back thousands of years to the times of the Celtic tribes in the area. They are considered one of the oldest horse breeds in Galicia and in the world. These sturdy and resilient horses have also been an integral part of the rural communities in Galicia. We will learn a bit about the history and way of life of the Garrano wild horses with Adrian of Finca Moreiras who has done so much for the awareness of this breed, and to protect the horses in danger of extinction, and for this, we carry out a breeding process where wild and in a herd they grow in their natural conditions where they have been doing so for thousands of years. He also offers guided trail rides and even a 4X4 safari to see the Wild horse on A Groba Hill in collaboration with the Tourism of Baiona. During our live stream, we should get a good glimpse of a few wandering around A Groba.

A special event takes place every year during June and July called A Rapa das Bestas (The Shearing of the Beasts) where they corral the horses down the hill and the veterinarians check their health, and the hairdresser cut their manes and tails. Then they run back up the hill with them Running of the Wild Horse in Galicia!, a festive event celebrated for centuries in different parts of Galicia where the Garranos horse are found.

Panoramic Views of Baiona at Sunset from the O Cortelliño & Alto da Groba lookout points

This hill stands at around 648 metres (2,125 feet), highest and is part of a Sierra with a chain of mountains that stretch from Baiona, Tui, and A Guarda.  The first lookout point we stop at will be O Cortelliño Mirador, a birds-eye view of Baiona´s harbour, bay, and even the Cies Islands in the distance, quite a setting for a spectacular sunset! Then we will take a short drive up to the Alto da Groba, then walk a trail to see the views from an observation hut, Caseta do Montouto. Apart from the wild horses, we will also see some of the Rubia Gallega (Galician Blond Cows) that graze at the top of A Groba Hill.

The surrounding nature grows lush with pine and eucalyptus trees, heather, gorse, and other wildflowers. The river Groba runs through the silent forest valley a great place for walking the trails and spending a day or two getting in touch with nature. Nothing healthier than climbing this hill and wandering around trails, while you watch wild horses grazing on the hillsides. Even take a horse riding day trip with an expert local horse guide, a sustainable way of discovering the magic of A Groba in Baiona!

It is lovely to be touring Sean and Tiernan again and this was a beautiful re-introduction to their tours. They were a little worried early on by the absence of almost all the horses, but the horses had clearly checked the calendar and seen the tour was due to start at 8.30 BST and they duly arrived not long afterwards and allowed us all to admire them. The horses are in exceptional condition and it was very interesting to hear about why that is and the role people play in the lives of these beautiful wild horses. In the second part of the tour, Sean and Tiernan took us further up the hill so we could look down into the valley of Baiona and also enjoy the gorgeous golden sunset. There had been hints of it right from the start of the tour, but as we looked down into the valley, we watched the sun spreading gloriously across the sky in the perfect end to a wonderful tour. It is difficult to go wrong when a tour has horses and sunsets, but Sean and Tiernan made it even more special with their knowledge, their enthusiasm and their delightful companionship, and it is great news that the tour will be repeated in a couple of weeks as this is definitely a tour which is worth seeing twice.
