Introduction
The Connection between Catalonia and the Coastal Fishing village of Cangas do Morrazo
There is a strong historic connection between Catalonia and the coastal fishing village of Cangas do Morrazo, Galicia. In 1816 Salvador Massó Palau came to the Peninsula of O Morrazo and started up his first fish-salting factory in Bueu. Then in 1942 as the company of Masso grew larger they built a Gourmet Cannery in Cangas. It also had a part for whaling, when it was allowed from the 50s till 1985. The factory has said to have employed almost 2000 people in the area of Morrazo helping families make a living in this beautiful coastal region. After 4 generations of the Masso Family running the business, the company closed its doors in 1996.
Most important Galician canning companies
It was one of the most important Galician canning companies in the sector both in the 19th and 20th centuries. Now the remains of the Masso Cannery still stand but in an abandoned state waiting to finally reach an agreement to renovate for another use, not determined yet. It is a good example of the industrial architecture of its time. There is a museum dedicated to the Masso Legacy in Bueu, well worth a visit to learn the history of the family company.
