Get to Know the Food and Wine Scene in Funchal

Taste the island´s well-known Madeira wine at the first stop, where the tradition of fortified wine comes to life, proving that in Madeira, it´s always a good time for a sip! The second stop, a charming restaurant, invites you to enjoy Madeira table wine paired with crostinis and locally sourced products. Discover the irresistible chocolate combined with traditional flavours at the third stop, a Madeiran chocolate factory. The fourth stop takes you to a popular Madeira cookies and sweets factory that all locals enjoy especially during Christmas time! At the Farmer´s Market, on the fifth stop, immerse yourself in a vibrant world of exotic fruits and experience the lively fish market, offering a glimpse into the island´s abundant produce.

As your journey continues the sixth stop invites you to savour home-cooked dishes with the flavours of traditional Madeiran cuisine, offering an overview of the culinary traditions of the island. The seventh stop introduces you to a typical old Madeiran grocery store, where you can find a wide variety of spices, beans, and potatoes. Here is where you will taste the famous Poncha, renowned as the "medicine" of Madeira, believed to cure anything from a cold to a broken heart. The eighth stop is a common local bar where you will eat black scabbard fillet sandwiches or fresh tuna, a treat available anytime during the day. After a morning filled with delicious tastings, you will then finish the food and wine experience at the ninth stop, a charming tea house in the Old Town, providing the perfect ending to your day of food and wine exploration.

Day by day itinerary

DAY 1:
FUNCHAL

  • 10:30AM: Meet your English Speaking Guide at the entrance of the H&M Store in Infante´s Roundabout. (NOTE: Attendance 15 minutes earlier is required.)
  • 1st stop will be a Madeira Wine Producer. Madeira Island is best known for its fortified wine for over 500 years, so we had to taste some Madeira wine on this tour! 
  • After tasting some wine head to the 2nd stop. A restaurant where we will taste Madeiran wine and crostinis with local products and flavours.
  • Make your way to the 3rd stop. Visit a Madeiran chocolate factory that combines irresistible chocolate with typical flavours.
  • 4th stop will be a well-known Madeira cookies and sweets factory.
  • 5th stop is the Farmer´s Market. 
  • On our 6th stop, we will have time to sit down and enjoy some typical and home-cooking dishes that despite being served in a restaurant, look just like what is served in our homes.
  • 7th stop is a typical old Madeiran grocery store, where you can shop for spices, beans, potatoes… Here you will have the chance to taste the famous Poncha.
  • The 8th stop is a typical bar amongst the locals. Here you will usually eat black scabbard fillet sandwiches or fresh tuna, any time of the day.
  • 01:00PM: After a morning filled with delicious tastings, we will end our tour in the 9th stop, a tea house in the Old Town, the perfect ending for this tour.

Early this year we took the Food & Wine Walking Tour in Funchal. It was excellent! Roberto our guide was full of local knowledge and of course the food & wine! As a foodie, this tour was the perfect introduction to the gastronomy of Madeira. I highly recommend you do this tour when you arrive. Obrigado and we will be back very soon for more!
