Ferrol is superbly located in a deep water estuary on the Rias Altas Galician coast. It’s a famous naval base where the dictator Francisco Franco was born. People flock here for it’s easter (Semana Santa) processions. Its docks and shipbuilding industries are impressive so if you like industrial and urban heritage it really is worth visiting. Parts of the Old Town are well preserved around the Magdalena neighbourhood which dates back to the 1700s. San Felipe Castle is impressive right next to the sea at the opening of the bay. The ancient pilgrimage route, the English Way, starts in the Port close to the Arsenal Militar. The Naval Museum is nice too. There’s a great walk from around the Port area taking in Plaza de Amboage, the area around the Parador and Reina Sofia Park.
There are lots of fantastic places to see nearby. Cedeira is a small Port with a long stretch of beach in a pretty estuary. The sanctuary/pilgrimage site at San Andrés de Teixido is a must as is the nearby cliffs at Vixia de Herbeira which at over 600 metres are the highest in Europe. Surfers head to the internationally famous Doniños beach. Fragas do Eume which extends to over 9,000 hectares is one of the best-preserved Atlantic, oak woodlands in Europe.
