Sean, Angie and Chef Sergio preparing for our live rural cooking experience at Santo Queijo in Santo da Serra, Madeira.
Madeira is a destination that is best understood through atmosphere: the light over the Atlantic, the sound of local gatherings, the rhythm of the markets, the smell of food being prepared, and the stories of the people who keep traditions alive.
Over the past weeks, we have been sharing Madeira in a new way through our live and pre-recorded virtual experiences, created in collaboration with our partners Visit Madeira. These experiences are designed to bring travellers closer to the island, not only through landscapes, but through local people, food traditions and small stories that reveal the character of Madeira.
Our latest virtual experience began with one of Madeira´s most spectacular moments: the fireworks over Funchal. Now we continue the journey into a very different side of the island, the rural food traditions of Santo da Serra and Santo Queijo.
From fireworks over the Atlantic to a country kitchen in Santo da Serra, this is Madeira through real moments, local stories and island flavours.
Funchal and the Atlantic light before our fireworks livestream began.
Our recent Funchal fireworks livestream was a celebration of Madeira at night, full of colour, sound, energy and Atlantic atmosphere. It was a chance to share one of the island´s memorable summer events in real time with viewers who could not be here in person.
Before the fireworks began, we experienced Funchal from the water at sunset, with music, tropical fruit, local wine, poncha and the relaxed atmosphere of the Atlantic. It gave the livestream a natural beginning, not just with the fireworks themselves, but with the feeling of being in Madeira as evening slowly arrived over the bay.
The highlight of the evening was the Atlantic Festival fireworks display, with Portugal on display over the bay of Funchal. Seen from the water, with the reflections on the Atlantic and the lights of the city rising into the hills, it was an excellent first live experience for our Madeira virtual series.
Portugal´s fireworks display during the Atlantic Festival, seen from the water in Funchal.
For us, this kind of live experience is not only about showing a destination. It is about creating a connection. A livestream has its own rhythm. It is spontaneous, sometimes imperfect, but also immediate and honest. Viewers can feel part of the moment as it happens.
The fireworks experience gave us the first chapter in this Madeira virtual series: a festive, coastal and evening view of the island.
You can watch the Funchal fireworks livestream replay here:

The livestream also reached viewers through virtual travel and livestream communities, helping introduce Madeira to new audiences online.

For travellers who would like to enjoy Funchal from the sea in person, we also offer our Madeira Sunset Xavelha Boat Tour from Funchal. It is a relaxed way to experience the coastline, the Atlantic light, the harbour atmosphere and the sunset feeling that makes Madeira so special.
This traditional Xavelha boat experience connects beautifully with the spirit of the fireworks livestream: Madeira from the water, local stories, sea views and a slower way to experience Funchal beyond the usual viewpoints.
Our Madeira Sunset Xavelha Boat Tour from Funchal offers another way to experience the island from the Atlantic.

After sharing the spectacle of Funchal´s fireworks, our next virtual experience takes us into the hills of Santo António da Serra, often known simply as Santo da Serra.
Santo da Serra is one of those places in Madeira where rural life, food traditions and local families still feel very present. Between the Sunday market, small producers, green landscapes and country kitchens, it gives a different view of the island, beyond the coast and the usual viewpoints.
This is a place connected with local produce, rural gatherings, traditional flavours and the slower rhythm of Madeira´s countryside.
The green rural landscape of Santo da Serra, one of Madeira´s traditional countryside areas.
For this next experience, we wanted to connect the Sunday market with a local producer and a cooking experience at Santo Queijo, a family artisan cheese producer in Santo da Serra.
Learn more about Santo António da Serra, Madeira
Originally, our plan was to begin the livestream directly from Santo da Serra Sunday Market, one of Madeira´s most authentic rural markets. We went there to test the signal before the event, but the connection was not stable enough for a good quality live broadcast. It was cutting out, pixelated and not the quality we wanted to share with viewers.
So instead of forcing a bad livestream from the market, we recorded a short 4K virtual visit with Chef Sergio and Angie.
This pre-recorded market visit allows viewers to still enjoy the atmosphere of Santo da Serra Sunday Market: seasonal produce, flowers, traditional snacks, roasted frango, poncha, dentinhos and the everyday rhythm of a Sunday morning with local families, farmers, artisans and visitors.
It is not a polished promo video. It is meant to feel like a natural virtual walk through the market before continuing the journey live from Santo Queijo.
You can watch the pre-recorded market visit here:
Watch the Santo da Serra Sunday Market 4K virtual tour on YouTube
After the market visit, the journey continues live from Santo Queijo, a family artisan cheese producer in Santo António da Serra.
This live virtual experience will focus on rural Madeiran food traditions, artisan cheese and country cooking with Chef Sergio. We will share the story of Santo Queijo, taste local cheese and continue into a relaxed Madeiran cooking demo.
We will be joined by our local culinary partner, Chef Sergio of Hungry Nomad, whose work celebrates Madeira´s ingredients, producers and island food traditions.
From the restored rural setting of Santo Queijo, we will explore some of Madeira´s iconic flavours, including poncha, bolo do caco, espetada, black scabbardfish, one of Madeira´s iconic local fish, and queijada baked in the wood-burning oven.

Fresh artisan cheese from Santo Queijo, one of the local flavours featured in our Madeira culinary experience.
This experience is not only about recipes. It is about place, people and tradition. It is about understanding how food connects Madeira´s countryside, local producers and family kitchens.
We will not be giving a full step-by-step cooking class during the livestream, because the complete hands-on cooking experience is part of our in-person Madeira culinary day tour. Instead, the live session will offer a taste of the experience, with stories, key ingredients, cooking moments and the rural atmosphere of Santo Queijo.
After the live, viewers will be able to request recipe notes by filling out a short feedback form shared with the experience.
