Inside the Festa das Vindimas in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos

Every September, Madeira celebrates its centuries-old relationship with grape growing and wine. In Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, the festival brings together local residents, visitors, folklore groups, traditional costumes, music, regional gastronomy and the customs surrounding the annual grape harvest.

Our experience begins with views across Estreito’s vineyards, mountains and traditional neighbourhoods before visiting Nossa Senhora da Graça Church and entering the heart of the festival.

We then follow the colourful Cortejo Etnográfico through the village. The parade brings Madeira’s rural heritage to life through decorated floats, traditional clothing, musicians, dancers, agricultural scenes and local food and wine traditions.

Along the route, we meet our friend Chef Duarte and members of the Confraria Enogastronómica da Madeira in their ceremonial attire. Sean also samples Madeira wine served from a traditional horn, while Angie tastes a small piece of bolo de mel.

Traditional Grape Stomping and Madeira Wine Culture

After the parade, we visit the traditional lagar as freshly harvested grapes arrive for the Pisa e Repisa. This traditional grape stomping is one of the festival’s most emblematic moments and celebrates the people, work and customs behind Madeira’s historic wine culture.

The complete replay lasts approximately 1 hour and 49 minutes and includes video chapters, allowing you to move easily between the village views, church, ethnographic parade, interview with Chef Duarte, wine traditions and grape stomping.

Join Sean and Angie in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos during one of Madeira’s most traditional wine celebrations, the Festa das Vindimas.

The experience begins with views across Estreito’s vineyards, mountains and traditional neighbourhoods before visiting Nossa Senhora da Graça Church and entering the heart of the festival.

We then follow the colourful Cortejo Etnográfico through the village, with its decorated floats, musicians, dancers, traditional costumes and scenes celebrating Madeira’s rural and agricultural heritage.

During the parade, we meet our friend Chef Duarte and members of the Confraria Enogastronómica da Madeira. The Brotherhood helps preserve and promote Madeira’s wines, gastronomy, local products and cultural traditions.

Following the parade, we continue to the traditional winepress for the Pisa e Repisa ao Vivo, the traditional grape stomping that forms one of the festival’s most iconic moments.
